WHS Management System

A health and safety management system is a process put in place by an employer to minimize the risk of injury and illness.

This is made possible by identifying, assessing and controlling risks to workers in all workplace operations. The scope and complexity of a system will vary according to the type of workplace, and the type of operations carried out.

An effective health and safety management system must have the following 8 components in place:

  • Identification and analysis of health and safety hazards at the work site
  • Control measures to eliminate or reduce the risks to workers from hazards
  • Clearly demonstrated and management commitment, and written company policy
  • Worker competency and training
  • Inspection program
  • Emergency response planning
  • Incident reporting and investigation
  • Management system administration

The components of a Safety Management System are very variable and are dependent on what the system manages and intends to achieve. Safety Management Systems are therefore fairly complex as they should contain all of the components necessary to cover all issues in the management of a particular site or area.

The scope of the review process and the development of the Safety Management System is determined entirely by the objectives of the client concerned, and is therefore tailored to their specific needs. Naturally the objectives must be compatible with the resources allocated.

Identification of the relevant Workplace Health and Safety issues of concern through a systematic process and determination of the appropriate action to address those identified concerns, allows for the development of formalised Safety Management System documentation.

The Workplace Health and Safety Management System should be developed in accordance with the requirements of the WHS legislation and in addition there will be further consideration of the relevant management System Standards.

We can develop the identified Safety Management System “Framework” documentation with the supporting forms, and tools. With each of the program elements or components there will be recommendations for implementation.

The development of a Safety Management System requires procedures that enable all employees to clearly understand the policies and the procedures established for the achievement of the safety objectives of the organisation.
